canceling IFR

An expression used by a pilot when flying IFR (instrument flight rules) to change the rules of flight, as specified on the flight plan or itinerary, from IFR to VFR (visual flight rules). This results in ATC’s (air traffic control’s) discontinuing the provision of IFR separation but does not automatically close the flight plan or itinerary.
